Geography

We aim to equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

To embed our five values of: Love of learning, aspiration, compassion, confidence and resilience throughout our curriculum.

  • Clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. The Geography National Curriculum and EYFS is planned for and covered in full within the EYFS, KS1 and KS2 school curriculum. Whilst the EYFS and National Curriculum forms the foundation of our curriculum, we make sure that children learn additional skills, knowledge and understanding and enhance our curriculum as and when necessary.

Geography usually used as a topic focus for the term as a key topic (as is History) but we also aim to ensure that it is integrated into other areas of the curriculum and the basic skills are taught throughout the year through cross curricular work.

We aim to provide children with a termly ‘Outdoor Learning’ block. During this time children, will gain key knowledge and skills across the curriculum. We will also incorporate appropriate elements of ‘101 Things to do before you leave Meltham Moor’ and the curriculum enhancement overview.

  • Children will have a deep knowledge and understanding of the world around them, their impact on it and how they can positively effect it. They will appreciate the environment beyond their immediate environment.

Children will understand and use the key skills of: Geographical enquiry; direction and location; drawing and using maps; representations; scale/distance and perspective.

The large majority of children will achieve age related expectations in Geography.

As geographers, children understand how knowledge about the world around them can impact the decisions they make in their lives in the future.
